The Queen has approved the re-appointments of Sir Robert Smith Kt, National Governor for Scotland and Professor Fabian Monds CBE, National Governor for Northern Ireland. Both re-appointments are for a period of four years with effect from 1 August 2003. The Queen has also approved the extension of the appointment of Dame Pauline Neville-Jones DCMG, International Governor, for a period of two years from 1 January 2004.

  1. These are part-time appointments. BBC National and International Governor posts are remunerated at the level of £27,520 per year for a time commitment of two days per week.
  2. Sir Robert Smith has been the BBC National Governor for Scotland since 1999. He chairs the BBC’s Programme Complaints Committee and BBC Children in Need and is a member of the Audit and Property Committees. Since July 2002 he has been Chairman of the Weir Group plc and is currently a member of the Board of the British Council and Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland. Sir Robert has also been Chief Executive of Morgan Grenfell Asset Management and a Director of the Financial Services Authority. Other posts have included that of Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Museums of Scotland. He has not undertaken any significant political activity in the last five years.
  3. Professor Fabian Monds CBE has been the BBC National Governor for Northern Ireland since 1999. He is a Member of BBC’s Programme Complaints Committee and Fair Trading Compliance Committee. Professor Monds is a specialist in communications and information systems and Chairman of Invest Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Centre for Trauma and Transformation in Omagh. He was formerly Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Ulster. Founding partner of Medical and Scientific Computer Services Limited and WesternConnect Limited. He has not undertaken any significant political activity in the last five years.
  4. Dame Pauline Neville-Jones has been the BBC International Governor since 1998. She Chairs the Audit Committee and the Governors’ World Service Consultative Group and is a member of the Programme Complaints and Remuneration Committees. She became Chair of QinetiQ Group plc in 2002 and previously worked in the Diplomatic Service from 1963 to 1996 including three years as Political Director in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. She has worked for NatWest markets and its corporate advisory arm, Hawkpoint Partners. She has not undertaken any significant political activity in the last five years.
