New teachers better than ever
The quality of newly qualified teachers is higher than ever according to reports published by schools watchdog Ofsted today.
School Standards Minster David Miliband said that the reports prove the Government’s measures to improve the quality and status of teaching are taking effect.
The reports on the quality of initial teacher training in England show that:
- Today’s newly qualified secondary school teachers are the best we’ve ever had;
- Training in how secondary school teachers plan and teach lessons has improved considerably; and
- Trainee primary teachers’ knowledge in maths and English has also improved.
David Miliband said:
“Ofsted have previously said we have the best generation of teachers ever, now they say we have the best teacher trainees ever. This presents a unique opportunity to take forward the momentum of reform.
“We are not complacent though. While all areas of teacher training have improved, some areas have improved less significantly than others. In those areas, the DfES has already begun working with the TTA to ensure further progress is made.”
Around 22,000 people achieve Qualified Teacher Status each year. Ofsted’s reports are based on inspections of 273 primary ITT courses and 600 secondary subject ITT courses over the period 1998-2002.
