Briefing from the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman on: Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland
Asked if the Prime Minister and the Taoiseach would have anything to say after their meeting, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) said the Prime Minister would not be doing any media. He did not know whether the Taoiseach would speak in the street. As we had said at the time of the postponement of the elections there would need to be work done to establish the necessary confidence so that we could move forward. This meeting should be seen in that context as follow up to the Prime Minister’s meeting with the Taoiseach at the European Council. It was essentially about shaping that agenda. Asked if there would be any attempt to get the Northern Ireland Executive up and running again or whether we were happy to let the current position to continue, the PMOS said that we were very focussed on all the issues in relation to the Northern Ireland peace process. A workable executive was clearly a very important part of that. This meeting today showed our determination to try and make progress if any signal were needed.
