PMOS afternoon briefing - 11 November

Briefing from the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman on: EU Constitution and EU Constitution.

EU Constitution

Asked if he would agree that the Prime Minister should ‘practise what he preached’ when congratulating the Chief Executive of Hong Kong for undertaking public consultation on constitutional reform, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) said that if he was being asked about the EU Constitution in a very round about way, our position on the issue was well known. As the Prime Minister had pointed out many times previously - most recently at PMQs last week, referendums had been held in areas where there had been constitutional change. Our position on the EU Constitution had not changed.

President Bush

Asked if Downing Street had been in discussions with Scotland Yard about the potential for the protest when President Bush visited the UK next week, the PMOS said that operational issues relating to the handling of demonstrations and protests were a matter for the police.

Asked if the issue of US steel tariffs would be raised during the Prime Minister’s talks with the President, the PMOS said that it depended on whether progress had been made by the time the President arrived. Clearly it was a live issue in terms of the WTO announcement yesterday and the potential EU counter-measures. Obviously, it had been, and continued to be, an area of concern for us.
