New weapon launched in fight
against gun crime
A new gun crime database launched today will help to bring more criminals to justice by improving the speed and quality of police intelligence sharing.
The national Firearms Forensic Intelligence Database will help to link crimes regardless of where or when they take place. Once a weapon or ammunition is entered into the system, it can be checked against data from all 43 police forces in England and Wales to see if there are any matches.
Home Office Minister Caroline Flint said that the database, which has been developed with more than £1m of government funding, will be an invaluable tool for the police. Ongoing action also includes:
- The national amnesty earlier this year that took nearly 44,000 guns and more than 1m rounds of ammunition off the streets;
- Measures approved in the Criminal Justice Act last week to introduce a minimum five year sentence for illegal possession of banned firearms;
- A ban on carrying air guns and replicas in public;
- Government support for work that communities are doing, with £1.2m allocated form money recovered from criminals; and
- Intelligence-led police operations.
“The government is determined to tackle the gun crime which can rip apart lives, families and communities,” said Ms Flint.
