New Afghan constitution welcomed

5 January 2004

The Foreign Secretary has welcomed the new Constitution agreed by Afghanistan’s Constitutional Loya Jirga in Kabul yesterday (4 January).

The Loya Jirga convened on 14 December 2003 to discuss and agree the country’s new Constitution.

The Foreign Secretary congratulated the Constitutional Loya Jirga on the successful adoption of a new Afghan Constitution.

"This is another critical milestone in the Bonn Process, and a vital step on the path towards a stable, democratic and peaceful Afghanistan that respects the rights of all Afghan citizens - men and women. It marks the determination of the Afghan people to set their country on the course to peace, prosperity and international respect.

"With the adoption of the new Constitution, the stage is set for the concluding phase of the Bonn Process, culminating in national elections later in 2004."
