Appointment to Board of Trustees of the Tate

The Prime Minister has today appointed Melanie Clore as a Trustee of Tate for a period of four years.

Biographical Notes

Melanie Clore has been the Deputy Chairman of Sotheby’s Europe since 1997 and Co-Chairman Worldwide of Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art Department since 2000. She joined Sotheby’s in 1981 and in 1991 was appointed Head of the Impressionist and Modern Art Department, Europe, and in 1995 became a member of Sotheby’s European Board. Melanie Clore was Trustee of the Whitechapel Art Gallery from 1988-98, has sat on the Executive Committee (1991-94) and Acquisitions Committee (1994-95) for the Patrons of New Art at Tate and is a member of the East Wing Project at the National Gallery.

Melanie Clore holds no other public appointments and has not carried out any political activity in the last five years.

Notes for Editors

Tate is a family of galleries comprising Tate Britain and Tate Modern in London, Tate St Ives and Tate Liverpool. The Tate galleries house the national collection of British art from the sixteenth century to the present day including the Turner Bequest and the national collection of international modern art.
