Record numbers in work

12 May 2004

New figures show that unemployment in the UK is at its lowest in nearly 30 years.

The latest labour market figures also show that growth in employment continues. There are now 28.35m people in work in the UK - the highest figure ever recorded.

The figures show that there are 1.95m more people in work than seven years ago.

The Prime Minister said:

"That means one more person in work every two minutes since this Government has been in power. But we are not complacent. The Government will continue to strengthen the New Deal as we move towards full employment."

The internationally-recognised ILO measure of unemployment shows that the figures are the lowest since 1975.

Jobcentre Plus and the New Deal have helped to reduce unemployment and are beginning to make a difference to the number of people claiming other benefits.
