Queen’s Gallantry Medal
Jonathan DAVIES. Police Constable, Metropolitan Police.
For his actions in arresting an armed man.
On 14 May 2002, at about 2200 hours, two police officers were on a mobile patrol in West London when they saw a car that had been mentioned at an earlier briefing. The officers ordered the driver to pull over and as the car stopped, one of the officers approached and the man ran off. The officers drove after the suspect who headed towards a staircase, which was only accessible by a long detour, so they called for assistance. Constable Davies and a colleague responded and as they approached, the suspect emerged from the stairwell and on seeing the officers he ran off. Constable Davies gave chase during which the suspect stopped, turned and fired directly at him, striking his shirt, just missing the left shoulder. The suspect continued to approach Constable Davies, fired again and shot him in the left thigh. At that point, Constable Davies launched himself at the suspect, pushed him to the ground and during a wrestle, a third shot was fired, just missing him. Then his colleagues joined him and together they over-powered and detained the suspect. A bullet was later removed from Constable Davies’ leg. The suspect was convicted of attempted murder and possessing a loaded firearm in a public place and was sentenced to fifteen and five years on the two counts.
