The Queen has been graciously pleased to approve that Michael De La Bastide QC, Dame Joan Sawyer DBE, and Sir Dennis Byron be appointed members of Her Majesty’s most honourable Privy Council.

Michael De La Bastide QC was appointed Chief Justice of Trinidad and Tobago on 31 May 1995. He was called to the Bar in 1961 and served as Crown Counsel in the Office of the Attorney General from 1961 to 1963 before entering private practice. He was a member of the Wooding Constitution Commission, the Hyatali Constitution Commission and served as an Independent Senator from 1976 to 1981. He also served as President of the Law Association for three terms from 1987 to 1990 and was a senior partner in the firm of De La Bastide and Jacelon before his appointment as Chief Justice.
Dame Joan (Augusta) Sawyer DBE was appointed President of the Bahamas Court of Appeal in 2001. She was called to the Bar in 1973 and served as an Assistant Crown Counsel from 1973 to 1978; acting Stipendiary and Circuit Magistrate, 1978 and Senior Counsel from 1979 to 1983; acting Director, Legal Affairs, 1983; Counsel, Central Bank of the Bahamas from 1984 to 1988 and Justice from 1988 to 1995. She was Senior Justice from 1995 to 1996, Supreme Court of Bahamas and Chief Justice of the Bahamas from 1996 to 2001.
Sir (Charles Michael) Dennis Byron was appointed Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court in 1999. He was called to the Bar in 1965 and was a barrister-at-law, West Indies (Leeward Islands) from 1966 to 1982; Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court: High Court Judge from 1982 to 1990, Justice of Appeal from 1990 to 1996 and Acting Chief Justice from 1996 to 1999.
