National Heritage Memorial Fund

The Prime Minister has today re-appointed Dr Mike Philips as a Trustee of the National Heritage Memorial Fund for a term of three years.
Biographical Notes
Dr Mike Philips is Visiting Research Fellow at the South Bank University where he has been since 1993. Previously, he was a freelance journalist and broadcaster and has worked on programmes for the BBC World Service and BBC Radio 4, as well as having articles published by the Guardian, the Sunday Times, and the Observer newspapers. He started his career as an Education officer for the BBC, before becoming a TV Producer for Diverse Productions, where he made programmes for Channel 4 from 1977 to 1983. He then moved into academic circles by taking up the post of Senior Lecturer on Media Studies at the University of Westminster from 1983 to 1993. Dr Philips has also published several studies on multi-culturalism in the UK.

The National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) is a fund of last resort which provides grants for buying items which are of outstanding interest, importance to the national heritage, and which are at risk of being developed, damaged or destroyed. The NHMF is also responsible for the distribution of the heritage share of the proceeds from the National Lottery via the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The HLF gives financial help to projects which safeguard improved access to land, buildings, objects and collections of importance to the national heritage of the UK. It can also provide support for projects which produce wider public benefits in terms of education, access and urban regeneration. Remuneration for the post is £5,830 per annum.
