The Prime Minister has spoken of the ‘remarkable’ reaction of the British people to the tsunami disaster.
At his monthly press conference he gave an update on what the Government was doing to help the aid effort.
The Foreign Office has set up temporary offices in all the affected areas, he said, and staff had been deployed at airports to deal with the problems of British nationals.
Mr Blair revealed that the UK emergency handling centre took over 40,000 calls on 28 December and have since received more than 135,000.
Enough medical supplies to last 100,000 people for three months had been airlifted to Indonesia, he confirmed, including one million water purification tablets.
He confirmed that ’several hundred million’ pounds of aid would eventually be provided and added:
"We have given UNICEF £4 million, the World Health Organisation £3 million, Red Cross and Crescent £3.5 million and £400,000 each to Save the Children and Christian Aid."
