Tony Blair visits the City of London AcademyNew schools and improved facilities for sport, science, technology and music will be built thanks to a fresh cash injection from the government.

Education Secretary Ruth Kelly today said pupils and parents across the country would benefit from record funding amounting to more than one billion pounds.

Projects include new primary and secondary schools - including the first state Hindu faith school - and extra provision for youngsters with special educational needs.

There will also be six new music and dance school schemes and ten ‘classroom of the future’ design projects - which test out new ideas and construct a vision of how schools should look in the years to come.

The money being allocated to Local Education Authorities comes from the Targeted Capital Fund, which is designed to meet the most immediate local building needs.

Ruth Kelly said:

"Over the next fifteen years we will rebuild or refurbish every secondary school and at least half of all primary schools."

Later this month the government will publish a new White Paper on education. Tony Blair said yesterday:

"Britain now needs more than ever before to focus on education and skills and their vital importance in making this country competitive for the future."
