More cash for ‘personalised learning’ announces government

18 October 2005

Education Secretary Ruth KellyOne-to-one learning and tuition in smaller groups form part of a new initiative to teach the ‘3Rs’, Education Secretary Ruth Kelly has revealed.

Under the new Dedicated Schools grant, £335m will be channelled into ‘personalising the learning process’ for all students in Key Stage 3, with the funding to be in place by the 2007-08 academic year.

Part of the cash will be set aside for gifted children, who also deserve a personalised education, she said

This will take the form of extra support or tuition in subject areas where youngsters have a ‘particular interest or aptitude.’

Speaking to new teachers in London, Ms Kelly said the government also wanted to close the ‘persistent gaps in attainment’ between children of different ethnic groups and social classes.

She added:

"With this resource, I expect all secondary schools to provide to pupils who need it, comprehensive and intensive catch-up support in literacy and numeracy, embracing, where appropriate, one-to-one and small group tuition."

Maths and English is the ‘necessary foundation’ for all children and remains the first priority for the education system, she said.

Further details on personalised learning will be announced in the forthcoming education White Paper, which will receive full coverage on the Downing Street website.
