PM ‘determined’ to improve school meals

19 October 2005

Prime Minister Tony BlairTony Blair told MPs today that there was a ‘very clear’ link between the diet of children and their ability to learn.

Responding to a question about junk food advertising during his weekly PMQ session, he said:

"We in principle accept that where there is advertising of food and drinks that are high in fat, salt and sugar and are obviously aimed particularly at children there is a case for action."

"But obviously we will have to consider very carefully what the implications for that are.

"I can assure you we are absolutely determined to improve the position in relation to school meals and the diet of our children since the indications are very clear that that genuinely helps not just the health of our young people but also their ability to learn properly in school.”

Last month Education Secretary Ruth Kelly announced her intention to ban junk food from school canteens and vending machines in England by next year.
