We have prepared a film on the PM’s work in education, to help put the government’s proposals into context.
Read the transcript for the film below:
Prime Minister, Tony Blair:
First, just to say thank you to everyone for having me here at Bournville School, to say a big word of congratulations to the teachers and the teaching staff and everybody involved with the school and the pupils too for all the hard work and the good things you’re doing here.
Each of you has got a tremendous talent and the purpose of the schooling is to bring that talent out and let you make the most of yourselves and the most of your lives.
Sometimes people need little bit of help, in fact we all do in different ways and the help that has been given here is just absolutely remarkable.
The reason we wanted to come here to Dunraven is because you have done extremely well, and in a sense through you to say thank you to the teachers and all the staff and the pupils who have managed to lift the results significantly and then have a discussion with you to see how we can do even more in the future.
We have to do better. We must do better to tackle pockets of deep educational disadvantage, do better in lifting schools from average to good and do better in enabling more good schools to become genuine centres of excellence, giving as good an education in the state sector as anyone can buy in the private school system, that’s got to be the ambition.
Ruth Harker, Headteacher, Bournville School, Birmingham:
I think the message that I would like Mr Blair to take away is to ensure that the policies don’t put schools against each other but encourage them to work with each other and there are many policies which are doing that at the moment. But I’d like to ensure that all the policies do that.
David Boyle, Principal, Dunraven School, SW London:
Do you think there is a role for the increasing liberation of schools which are successful?
I believe really strongly that schools that have proved they’re well led and well run, that are delivering the right outcomes for the students that they work with, should be liberated.
Prime Minister, Tony Blair:
All schools will be able to have academy style freedoms. All schools will be able to take on external partners, no one will be able to veto parents starting new schools or new providers coming in simply on the basis that there are local surplus places.
Female voice:
I’ve been very impressed with Mr. Blair’s ability to listen.
