PM defends 90-day detention proposal

7 November 2005

Tony Blair at his monthly press conference in Downing Street 11 October 2005 Tony Blair has said again that he hopes the plan to detain terror suspects without charge for 90 days will be approved by MPs.

The government wants the period extended from 14 days in line with requests from police and the security services, but the plan has seen opposition in Parliament and from civil rights groups.

The PM told journalists at his monthly press conference that a ‘compelling case’ remained for the 90-day proposal. Read more about the PM’s press conference

This extra period was needed, he said, to protect national security and allow investigations to take place into complex terror networks - and compromise ‘was not right for the country.’

He said:

"There are people in our country now, as we speak, who are, we believe, engaged in trying to plot terrorist acts."
