Tony Blair said the Childcare Bill would open up a ‘new frontier’ for the welfare state. There would be ‘wrap-around childcare’ from 8am to 6pm, the PM said during Prime Minister’s Question Time.
Mr Blair told MPs:
"This is part of an extension to childcare over the next few years that will effectively mean a new frontier for the welfare state where there will be wrap-around childcare available… and that will help people balance work and family life.”
Mr Blair said extra funding was being made available.
Launching the plans - which would see parents of children between three and 14 get access to a year-round childcare place through extended schools, children’s centres and other early years providers - Education Secretary Ruth Kelly said:
"Mothers and fathers will have the certainty of knowing that whatever their background, high quality local early years education and childcare services will be available to support them and their children.
"The Bill is part of our drive to create quality childcare for children up to age 14 and a Sure Start children’s centre in every community by 2010."
