Honours are awarded to people for all types of service, including teachers, nurses, actors, scientists, diplomats and broadcasters. The largest number of awards goes to those providing services to their local communities - mainly volunteers.

In the United Kingdom, honours are normally awarded twice a year. A list is published on The Queen's Birthday in June and another list is published at the New Year.

Each list contains approximately 1350 names and consists of three sections: the Prime Minister's list, the Diplomatic and Overseas list, and the Armed Forces list. The Number 10 website carries the Prime Minister's list.
